Budiansky Residence, Albany, California
A small 1920's bungalow needed an additional bedroom. With a tiny backyard, the only solution was a second story. Incorporating matching rafter tails and gable boards, the new roof line resembles the original. Differentiated massing of the second story prevents it from overwhelming the first story, adding shadow lines and contrasting volumes. New custom wood windows and stucco reveals also helped retain the small and intimate scale of the original bungalow. On the interior, the lower floor was remodeled with arched openings for better flow between rooms and the outdated kitchen was transformed with simple prefabricated cabinets. Upstairs, a cathedral ceiling adds height to a small bedroom while a custom stained glass window illuminates the cheery stairwell. |
