PORTFOLIO: RESIDENTIAL: ADDITIONS

Hester Addition, Alameda, California

This small 1940's split-level home had a wonderful yard but needed a master suite and some general remodeling. On the main floor, the kitchen and dining room were reconfigured while a deck and family room were added. In the basement, a bathroom and guest room were improved and on the split floor, the children's rooms were remodeled to include a window seat overlooking the large back yard. On the upper floor, to accommodate the parents, a master bedroom and office were added to take advantage of yard views and a master bath and laundry room complete the second-story addition.

The unifying feature of the remodel is a light-filled, two-story foyer which ties all four levels together -- every room in the house has a view to this space. The foyer's craftsman-style stairway includes two landings overlooking the atrium while traditional casement windows provide light from three sides. Throughout the residence, craftsman lighting adds to the warm ambience.
