![]() Albany Sauna, Albany, California Paper-backed insulation near the brick kiln was the cause of a fire at Albany Sauna. Luckily, the damage was contained to the sauna rooms themselves which were completely reconstructed with modern methods and materials, including electrical, mechanical, and glazing systems. Much research resulted in the selection of materials designed specifically for use in this steam-type sauna: fire-retardant wood framing, waterproof membrane, flashing, rapid-setting stucco, and two-part epoxy industrial paint replaced the 1930 materials that were destroyed in the fire. In addition, seismic bolts were added, dry-rotted wood was replaced, walls and ceilings were insulated, and the kiln was strengthened and insulated. Finally, new tile walls and floors were selected for their durability. The end result is a more comfortable and pleasant sauna that uses about 30% less energy to achieve Nirvana. |
