♦ 2005 Best Room Addition, Chrysalis Award This contemporary ranch-style home needed a new kitchen, a larger dining area while the family wanted space to hang out together. Interior walls were removed to combine dining and kitchen areas and a family room was added where an unused exterior deck stood. An informal peninsula with seating serves both kitchen and dining areas. The old dining area became a cozy study place for the children, complete with a computer niche and a window seat overlooking the new deck. A cased opening leads from the new dining room into the new family room. The intimate family room features a spacious cathedral ceiling and many windows. A direct-vent stone fireplace anchors the room while sliding doors take advantage of the new “Colonial” deck. On the opposite wall, a french door leads to their existing hot tub. Skylights add natural light and numerous reverse-cycle fans save air-conditioning and heating costs.
