East Bay Montessori School, El Sobrante, California

The East Bay Montessori School is unique in that it is one of the few schools which offer elementary education (Pre-K through fifth grade). Similar schools typically offer only preschool through kindergarten levels. This facility is also notable for its state-of-the art teaching materials. The school provides students with three generous outdoor areas to accommodate a variety of activities from gardening to basketball to play structures for all ages.

The building program involved converting an existing office building into a modern educational facility on a large commercial site. The building was completely renovated and all life safety, structural, electrical, and mechanical systems were upgraded to meet current codes. The project also incorporated many innovative features which enhance the Montessori philosophy. Tubular skylights were used in all the classrooms and common areas to provide a large amount of natural light as well as to save energy.
