![]() Meyer Kitchen, Oakland, California Part of a larger remodel project, this small Arts & Craft home needed a new kitchen: an existing rear porch blocked views to the yard while circulation to the Dining Room was cramped and little light entered the space. An interior wall was replaced with a large cased opening which better connects the dining room to the kitchen and brings light and views to the center of the house. Because the kitchen is the center of activity for this family, the kitchen's rear wall was removed to open onto a new spacious family room addition with views to a generous backyard. Serving different floor levels, an informal peninsula was designed to serve both kitchen and family areas. Rich soapstone countertops were a practical choice in keeping with the vintage of the house while cherry cabinets add to the ambience. For continuity, oak flooring was selected and lots of warm Arts & Crafts lights were installed. Custom Craftsmen doors and windows match the originals in the rest of the house. Avid gardeners, the owners love their new kitchen with views to their front, back, and side yards in this sunny neighborhood. |
