Temple Kitchen, Berkeley, California
Inefficient, dark and cramped, this kitchen was a remodel-in-waiting for an owner who loved to cook.
First, the wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed and replaced with an arch and high counter
for a better working relationship between the two rooms. Second, an archway between the dining room and living
room was created for better circulation between all three rooms. Lastly, the kitchen was enlarged by moving the
western wall of the kitchen as far west as possible to capture beautiful San Francisco Bay views. Numerous
north-facing windows balance the natural lighting.
The new archways unify the home's Mission style and handmade craftsman tile was selected for the countertops
to continue the ambience. Arts & Crafts lighting and bungalow-style cabinets complete the look. With more
space, a large Viking range was accommodated as was a big Subzero refrigerator, a wine cooler, trash compactor,
vegetable sink, and lots of bookcases. The library adjacent to the kitchen also received some improvements in
the way of craftsman-style bookcases and a new leaded glass door.
