Water Pump Offices & Retail Spaces, Berkeley, California
A large historical complex, once the manufacturing site of water
pumps, was converted into offices and retail spaces by Abrams/Milliken
& Associates, receiving an award from the Berkeley Architectural
Heritage Association. Existing diamond-glass walls were preserved
and typical warehouse finishes such as galvanized siding and stucco
were used for their historical character and durability. Large industrial
windows are used in many spaces, typical and practical for the variety
of tenants. For this retail tenant, a curtain wall of storefront
and galvanized siding was installed in front of the steel roll-up
door for a more human-scaled storefront.
