The Town & Gown Club, 1899, is the oldest public structure by Bernard Maybeck, a master architect of the Arts & Crafts Period. It contains a sensitive addition by Julia Morgan, Maybeck’s famous protégé and was one of the first landmarks designated by the City of Berkeley. In 1999, Jerri Holan & Associates, AIA, completed a seismic upgrade for the building. The project received numerous awards for its preservation of historic exterior and interior finishes and its innovative structural system. Special attention was given to preserving Maybeck’s redwood detailing while a steel moment-resisting frame was installed through the building which joined a new roof truss to an enlarged foundation. After shear panels were installed, the 100-year-old redwood shingles were replaced with “recycled” shingles milled from salvaged old-growth logs.
